Sprinkling Kindness Project - Sally Steele

Our Sprinkling Kindness Project

If 2020 taught me anything it’s to appreciate those I hold dearest, to be grateful for all that I have, spend energy and time on things that bring me joy; and that a little kindness goes a very long way. The Sprinkling Kindness collaboration project really was a personal highlight for me and I’ve loved every minute of connecting with likeminded women.

To date we have launched a white tee with Kirsten from Bettyquette, a linen wrap blouse with Bev from Iris May Style, a stripe tee with Brooke from What Brooke wore and a beautiful resort kaftan with Suzie Richetti. My team and I have been blown away by the response and are very grateful to announce that we have now donated more than $1500 to the various charities of our muses’ choice.

As these styles have only been produced in limited numbers, they are also an investment towards exclusivity in your own wardrobe and will cover all your bases if you purchase across the collection as it evolves. A feel-good purchase, that earns its keep!

Introducing Sally

I got to know Sally Steele virtually through Instagram first, before meeting in person, and was drawn to her elaborate, confident style and her mantra of Dare More, Care Less.

I’d describe her as a magpie. She wears the sparkly, printed, fun goodness in fashion and, with her signature pink hair, definitely stands out from the crowd. She has a cheerleader personality which resonates with me and a positive outlook.

Sally asked me to create a sparkly jacket for her as according to Sally #MetallicsAreANeutral and can be wor, anytime anyplace anywhere and add that special zing to any outfit.

Taking in consideration the restrictions of local manufacture, price glass ceilings and that I wanted to additionally stay true to our Philosophy customer, I have created a simple timeless swing coverup.

Something new for 2021 was that this style was offered at Indent collection to our wholesale customers first and has therefore already generated a donation. It will be available in some of our fabulous boutique stockists shortly.

For our online customers we are offering the opportunity to pre-order to this limited edition piece. We will be able to make and ship the piece by mid March.

You can place a preorder from Wednesday 10 February until 11.59 pm Tuesday 16 February.

With a $10 donation to Beyond DV, for each jacket sold, this piece will ensure you feel as good about your purchase as you will look wearing it. Let’s sprinkle that style kindness, and shimmy in sequins in the process!

Name / Age / Location / Profession

Sally Steele / 49 / Brisbane / Strategist – Mentor – Speaker – Author

How would you describe yourself?

A well-travelled Glaswegian who chose Australia as her forever home 20 + years ago - Mother of 2 – Lover of one since 1994 – Cheerleader of many.

How would you describe your style?

My style mantra as described in my book Dare More, Care Less ® is always “High Impact – Low Maintenance ™”

What styles are you drawn to?

Love effortless timeless pieces that are versatile in all areas of my life. Things have to prove they can work hard to get a space in my closet. Love relaxed tailoring – especially all kinds of jackets that can be thrown over anything and suddenly change the vibe.

Favourite colour?

I love every colour but metallic wins every time !

Favourite print?

I rarely opt for plain; even my staples are statement in some way but combining them for a print party is my favourite. Polka dots, animal, florals, checks;  they all have a moment in the sunshine in my outfits.

Do you feel your lifestyle defines your style, or the other way around?

It was definitely a transition for me from Sydney Film and Events Marketing and Comms company director mainly in heels to running around after kids and dog in suburban Brisbane parks! I incorporated a lot more flats and jeans into my style about a decade ago. Now everything in my wardrobe works for all areas of my life so I think they cohabit very happily.

How has your style evolved?

I have always made bold choices – wearing my Dad’s tux and Doc Martens to my school formal or throwing my brother’s army jacket over a sequin dress for a Uni graduation. I like creating unusual combinations – mashing up styles and patterns. I guess it just gets more out there as I age. Often when people are going to a fancy-dress party, they call me to borrow something … wonder if that says something! Oh well.

Whose style do you admire?

I love the style of the 30s to the 60s in particular – but love women whose style was a bold expression of themselves and their values - who break the mould and are true individuals – like Louise Brooks, Elsa Schiaparelli, Katharine Hepburn, Doris Day, Jane Fonda, Vivienne Westwood, Iris Apfel.

What brands or stores do you favour?

I am a big opshop, preloved, garage and vintage girl – in terms of stores I love SWOP clothing exchange and have found amazing designer pieces there like Ellery and Sass and Bide.  I like to curate rather than consume – and don’t buy very often as pieces usually stay in my closet for decades. More and more I am drawn to supporting Australian brands and brands with a social conscience. Designer wise I adore what Romance was Born do – so original. I tend to sell pieces that are not being worn enough and buy something really special that will create stories for years to come. So when the book came out, I bought myself some RWB. When it was my 20th wedding anniversary and we went to Italy I bought some Gucci loafers and a bag.

What season do you prefer dressing for?

I love layering so cooler months are easiest but after a decade in Tropical Queensland I am getting better at expressing myself in summer too.

What are your deciding factors when considering a purchase?

Quality of fabric and fabrication is number one – even in an opshop. Is this piece going to stay in my closet and look good wear after wear for seasons and years to come?

I call it The Magic Number process - 3 questions – a process I teach those attending styling workshops and sustainable style events.

1.Do I absolutely f*#kin love myself in it? If NO – put it back

2. Do I have 3 other items I love that I can wear it with? (do not buy something to make something else work!)

3. Can I work it 3 different ways in my wardrobe– 3 different seasons, occasions or in different parts of my life for many years to come? If answer to all 3 is YES. buy it

What garment have you always struggled to style, or veered away from?

Nothing really …  I don’t tend to veer towards anything stretchy, unstructured, oversized or low cut as I am lacking natural curves and maybe bikinis in recent years as I have become more sunsafe.

What is your favourite style tip?

Style is an inside job ™ - without self-love and curiosity in yourself you are merely well dressed.

What piece would you like Philosophy to create for you as your signature style? A metallic or sparkly jacket – blazer, bomber, I like them all.

What Charity would you like to donate proceeds to, and why?

Beyond DV – I work with the charity and help the women and children who have escaped horrific Domestic Violence change their story through personal style and their programs are pioneering, innovative and helping change lives locally.

We love a quote, what’s your style philosophy?

It has to be the title of my book - Dare More, Care Less ®
